Dr Royal Benson, III Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics & GynecologyLEEP Excision of Cervical DysplasiaIf, after your colposcopy exam and biopsy results, it is determined by you and Dr. Benson that further treatment is required, he may suggest a procedure called LEEP. LEEP stands for Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure. This is an outpatient procedure done in Dr. Benson's office. It usually takes 15 minutes or less. You will be pre-medicated for this procedure so you may be quite groggy when the procedure is done for you. We will not perform this procedure on you unless you have someone who can wait for you in our waiting room during the entire procedure and then drive you home afterward. It is best to schedule the LEEP when you are not having your period. The procedure involves inserting a speculum (just like a regular pap smear requires). The loop instrument is then introduced through your vagina and the portion of diseased cervical tissue is smoothly removed. This tissue is again sent to the lab for study by the pathologist. Your cervix will be treated with a solution to help control any bleeding that may occur. You may return to work the next day. You will need to avoid inserting ANYTHING into your vagina until you see Dr. Benson for your follow up visit. This means you cannot have sexual intercourse until Dr. Benson releases you. You will require extensive follow up to determine that your new cervical tissue is staying healthy. It is imperative that you come for follow up appointments when notified by our office. |
