Dr Royal Benson, III Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology

Evaluation and Treatment of Diseases of the Cervix

Your cervix is the portion of your uterus that is tested during a pap smear.

If, unfortunately, your pap smear comes back with an abnormal diagnosis, it is necessary for you to seek further medical care.

In this event, Doctor Benson may ask you to come to the office for a repeat pap smear and/or you may be asked to come to the office for a procedure called COLPOSCOPY.

Colposcopy is a NON-INVASIVE procedure where Doctor Benson will insert a speculum, (just like during a regular pap smear). Doctor Benson will then wash your cervix and view your cervix under magnification. The colposcope is the instrument Doctor Benson uses, but it DOES NOT enter your body. If Doctor Benson sees areas on your cervix that look abnormal, he will take a very small piece of tissue, (a biopsy) and this will be sent to the lab for further studies. When your biopsy results are back, Doctor Benson will visit with you and explain the results to you.

The best results occur when cervical disorders are found early and treatment is begun quickly.

This is why keeping your follow up appointment is very important.
